The vegetative phase in Cannabis sativa L. is not simply about “growing green.” It's the most structurally and metabolically intense window of the plant’s life—where biomass, vascular capacity, and reproductive potential are built.

In controlled environments and open-field conditions alike, a successful vegetative phase depends on strict environmental monitoring, targeted nutrition, and early canopy training.

Week 1: Root Dominance and Rhizogenesis

At this point, shoot activity is secondary. The plant is activating a process known as rhizogenesis, driven by auxins and internal carbohydrate reserves.

  • Conditions: Soil temperature between 20–25°C; RH at 65–70%.
  • Management Tip: Avoid phosphorus excess—early-stage plants cannot process high EC yet.

This is the true vegetative engine room. Transpiration increases, chloroplast density peaks, and nutrient demand surges.

  • Key Nutrients: Nitrogen, calcium, magnesium.
  • Indicators: Rapid stem thickening, fan leaf expansion, and new node sites every 48–72 hours.
  • Management: Tighten irrigation intervals and maintain pH in substrate between 6.0–6.3 for optimal cation exchange.

Begin preventive IPM. This high-sugar, high-surface environment is ideal for early-stage pests.

Week 4: Structural Optimization and Transition Readiness

This is not maintenance—it’s a tactical moment. You’re preparing the plant for its shift into reproductive metabolism.

  • Core Tasks: Apical pruning (topping or FIM), early defoliation of basal leaves, foliar micronutrient application.
  • Optional Boost: Silica supplementation improves structural rigidity in anticipation of flower weight.

This is the last moment to redirect the plant’s energy allocation. Don’t wait for pre-flower to fix structural issues.
